Firhill Stables

March 2017 Newsletter

Firstly it is lovely to see everyone back at Firhill, we are very sorry for the delay in reopening, as you are all aware Wendy’s Mum has been unwell but thankfully is well on the road to recovery.

Last week we were awarded our licence by Cornwall County Council, we would like to thank all the volunteers for their help to achieve this. We are looking forward to a exciting new year with our old and new equine friends

We are currently working on a Easter timetable of events and a Pony Club camp for the summer (which will offer instalment plan), any suggestions of events you would like to see please feel free to let us know, your input would be gratefully received.

As you all know membership is usually due in September but due to last years temporary closure of the stables the team have decided to change the renewal to December this will give the current members approximately 6 months’ free membership as a welcome back and a thank you for baring with us.

We are now taking orders for polo shirts, which are available in several colours and options of what can be printed on them.
We are also able to purchase other items of clothing .Fleeces, sweatshirts hoodies and baseball caps to name a few

We are looking to relaunch Young Equestrians and launch Pony Club and we are planning another open day/relaunch day if anyone can spare some time for this or has
ideas for stalls that would be helpful
We are intending on having a Parent of Firhillers meeting to brainstorm ideas and new incentives for the upcoming months to be held at the borough arms .This will be held at 7pm on the 29th March in the snug at the Borough Arms .
This is by kind permission of Gemma Hyslop manager of the Borough arms for donating the venue free of charge.

Due to the advice of the stables accountant and the impact cancellations have on our timetable,
We have decided to change the booking system adopted by the stables .
We are planning to take payment in future one lesson in advance, the cancellation fees still apply,
These we are to be found on your yard induction checklist and will have been signed on your first lesson .
Please ask the staff if you are unsure of cancellation procedures
We are looking at getting a card machine to enable card payments to be made, However we have yet to get this so currently are still only accepting cash and cheques. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Also, we have been looking at a productive way of all the children learning the skills related to stable management we have decided to allocate the Young Equestrians into two levels, Intermediate and Advanced. The intermediate young equestrians will be required to attend training to aim for C level pony club test or the required pony club badges relating to horse care, for these Saturdays intermediate members incur a extra £15 charge alongside any riding lesson charge this is to cover hours 1 stable theory and 1 hours practical to work toward becoming an Advance member, also all Young Equestrians will be required to have 2 lessons a month. The Advanced Young Equestrians still need to attend regular sessions for stable management, show ability and confidence to help train the intermediate members compassionately. There will be no charge for advanced members. To receive Pony Club badges, you will need to be a member of pony club, although you do not have to become a pony member but you won’t be able to get the actual badges, we will however award certificates from Firhill to reward their achievements

We are aiming to approve for BHS and ABRS in the near future.

This year’s Young Equestrian points system available to both intermediate and advanced Young Equestrians will give the winner the opportunity to compete one of Firhills horses through the winter. The point system will reward the most dedicated and productive member of the team. The results of this point system will be announced in Novembers newsletter.

2017 is going to be a exciting and productive new year, putting our Young Equestrians on the map. We aim to confirm that talent and drive is more important than financial status. Our children excel because they are given the self confidence to do so.

We look forward to seeing you all and receiving your feed back.

News Letter December 2015

Firstly, apologies for the time lapse between the last newsletter and this new edition. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our clients Supporters and mentors a Very Merry Christmas from all at Firhill Stables
Our mailing list is increasing by the day so those of you that have been on board from the start please excuse me for going back over old events for the benefit of our new supporters and friends.
We are fully approved by Cornwall County Council and the New year holds the challenge of approving with both the British Horse Society and the Association of British Riding Schools.
Our last inspection fell at the same time that Our Senior Instructor Wendy’s partner, Mucker was going in for his hip replacement.
This resulted in Wendy teetering on the verge of a nervous breakdown and confirmed to us that the last year has built some amazing Friendships
We owe our licence to some amazing people !
Firstly The Spriggians .
Regular visitors to Firhill, will be aware that Wendy’s Boyfriend is in a Bike Club.
The Club has been amazing and we have had gangs of Bikers turning up donning Wellington boots and doing very un-biker like tasks.
On the day in question 5 Bikers turned up at approximately 8 am and shovelled horse poo, raked, tidied and brushed yards.
These tattooed laden, leather clad friends have made our stables happen and prove no matter what horse you love.
Flesh or Iron everything is achievable!!
Also Helen Farrell who single handed spruced every horse with a full make over for the day.
John for doing his normal amazing job at mucking out!!!
Adam and Ruby that fitted emergency lighting within a morning on the day.
The Inspector was honest and commented that after the last inspection he did not think the list of tasks could be completed in time. He was really amazed that we had done it and congratulated us over and over.
So where are we going now????
We are applying for Pony Club centre membership, ASDAN Qualifications and the Young Equestrians scheme.
The Pony Club Centre membership allows children without the privilege of owning their own pony to achieve their goals and compete against those that have, whilst meeting new likeminded people of their own age.
The ASDAN Qualifications offer training to learning disabilities allowing them to move and progress up through their Qualifications on an achievable level.
The Young Equestrians encourages young people to make friends, Build self-confidence and try activities outside of their common interest.
With this we aim to promote greater interaction between our own club members and also other stables, with activities such as bowling, cinema trips, BBQ’s ect.
We are now offering the Essential Horse Knowledge Certificate and Progressive riding tests.
We will also in the new year be offering in the New Year, Riding and Road Safety Training.
We are now looking for Committee members for the Friends of Firhill,
Our aim is to launch the Charity based organisation to facilitate further with our work in the Autistic Spectrum and the importance in training surrounding all Disabilities.
Coming from care backgrounds we are aware that the odd training course in this subject is not enough and lack of training could be very detrimental to our students
After working with a Gentleman called Tigger Pritchard from then Truro College, at Chiverton RDA.
Wendy gained vast experience from his 20 years’ knowledge in working with the Autistic Spectrum and methods of training. Wendy and Tigger are joining forces to tailor learning opportunities for each individual and group we teach.
Tigger will also be holding regular training sessions for Firhill .
These are for Firhills Staff, Volunteers and parents, but also for anyone who wishes to gain a deeper knowledge in the Spectrum.
Our First Training Day will be Wednesday 20th January. The course will run from 10 till 3 pm (Light Lunch Provided). Deposit of £15 upfront to secure place.

Sunday 27th of September and the sun shone down on the Stables and all of its inhabitants at Firhill Launch Day .
The morning started early on the yard for our amazing band of helpers all of whom had offered their services to plait , preen ,brush and pamper our Equine stars.
Shaun the sheep who was Kindly loaned to us by Tracey Haines of St Breward and our very own Huxley Pig took up their places in our petting area .Demonstrating how Huxley sits for a biscuit .
And our seven new baby ducklings born several days ago stole the show.
The day started with a demonstration lead rein lesson playing Games such as musical Status and the stables favourite “ What’s the Time Mr Wolf “ The Prize for best Fancy Dress was won by Evan Sapwell of Wadebridge with a brilliant Batman Costume . Firhill ‘s Instructor Wendy Discussed the Importance of making learning Fun and the importance of achievable goal setting in the learner rider.
Two of our other Members of the Lead Rein lesson Gracie and Poppy Singleton, once the lesson was over spent the rest of the afternoon with a guess how many sweets in the Jar competition . They proudly raised £7.00 for the cart for Cracker Fund
The Spriggins Motor bike Club kindly did a custom bike display for the Dads , Whilst our refreshments area served a delicious range of food for all .

We a proud to have these valuable and inspiring people agree to mentor and work as part of Firhill’s team.
We were also proud to welcome two Members of WRSAC along to promote services and are looking forward to working closer with them in the future .
Scott Tomkinson of Kernow Physio and his dog Troy came to pay a visit .Scott is able to carry out Mounted and Unmounted Physio sessions from Firhill .
This proves to be extremely valuable to horse riders that are experiencing pain and can be carried out on your own horse or one of Firhill’s .

If any of our visitors needed a cooling glass of some thing we had Clio’s Van Du Vin on hand with some fruity numbers .
